Well done Louise

Huge congratulations to Honorary member Louise Duncan who today secured her Ladies European Tour playing card for 2023

Having come through qualifying to get to the final stages, Louise was the only Scot to make it through to the 5th and final round at La Manga today. Full playing rights were only on offer for the top 20 in the final field of 60. Louise secured her place with a birdie at the final hole to finish joint 17th.

Congratulations Louise and all the best for 2023

Hole in One!

Congratulations to Julie Mackie, Troon ladies, who recorded a hole in one at the 10th hole, Portland, during her recent winter foursomes tie.

McCall Salver

The final of the McCall Salver was played on a lovely sunny day at Barassie golf club today. The finalists were Angela Lyden from Skelmorlie and Margaret Dalziel from Loudoun.

Angela (left) and Margaret (right) on the 1st tee

The game started with a friendly half on the first before Angela went ahead winning the 2nd. Both players found trouble at the 3rd but walked off with another half before Margaret had a lovely 2 at the 4th to square the match.

A few more holes changed hands before Margaret took a one hole advantage into the back 9. Wins at 10 and 12 gave her a 3 hole lead, Angela did win 13 but lost 14 then halves at 15 and 16 were enough for Margaret to win 3&2.

It was a lovely game played in a very sporting manner. Thanks go to Kilmarnock Barassie gc for courtesy and well done Margaret

Ayrshire runners up at Strathaven

On day 3 at the Jamboree the home side Lanarkshire were just too strong for Ayrshire as they won the title for the first time since 2004.

Needing a strong start this morning Ayrshire took one of the 3 foursomes matches which left 4 out of 6 singles needed to win. Unfortunately it wasn't to be with Lanarkshire gaining 4 and a half points.

The Ayrshire team did so well finishing second this year at an away venue and look forward to Williamwood next year.

Thanks to everyone who supported in person or with texts, cards and good wishes. Also a huge thanks to our loyal caddies, we couldn't do it without you.

Second win at the jamboree

Another tense afternoon at Strathaven watching the singles matches against D&A.

The girls pulled through with 3 wins out of 6 to hey an overall win today by 6 points to 3.

In a tense afternoon the girls pulled it out the bag! Needing 3 points for the win we won the singles by 3.5 to 2.5 making the overall score 5.5 to 3.5 for Ayrshire.

Day one at strathaven

After the morning foursomes on day one of the Jamboree, Ayrshire take a 2-1 lead into the afternoon singers against Renfrewshire.

West Kilbride celebrate their British Champion

A presentation was made to Louise Duncan recently at W.K.G.C. in order to publicly recognise the wonderful golfing achievements by Louise in 2021.   The Club Captain, for the benefit of any new members, recounted these successes.

Winner of the Women's British Amateur Championship

Top 10 finish and winner of the Smyth Salver in the AIG Women's Open

GB & I Curtis Cup Team Member

Invitation to play in Augusta National Women's Amateur event in Georgia and the US Open in 2022 and added that Louise has been selected once again to represent GB & I in the Curtis Cup this year.

As a past Chairman of the L.G.U. Nancy Chisholm was invited to make the presentation. Nancy was honoured to be asked and alluded to a connection, in that she had a similar presentation to make to Stirling golfer Alison Rose who was the last Scottish winner of the British in 1997 when she was Chairman and, much to Nancy's delight, Alison also won the Scottish Amateur Championship in the same year here at West Kilbride! Nancy added that West Kilbride is very much on the map with talented lady golfers, with Sarah Ramsay from our club being the current Ayrshire Ladies Champion. Nancy thanked Lady Convenor Catherine Garrett who researched to produce this picture and Sarah Ramsay for spending many hours on the computer to put together this lasting memory for Louise. Nancy closed by wishing Louise all the very best in the Curtis Cup matches at Merion Golf Club, U.S in June and indeed with her own golfing career ahead.

Thanks to June Kerr for the report and photograph

Winter Foursomes Final

The final of the Winter Foursomes was played on a reasonably calm, dry day at the Irvine Golf Club.

Both teams were up for the challenge although nerves were evident in the first couple of holes. Audrey and Liz got off to a great start going 2 up after 2 but Ann and Susan managed to win the 3rd to go back to 1 down. It was nip and tuck and the game stayed at 1 up to Liz and Audrey at the turn.

Susan and Ann found their putting strokes on the inward half, making it very difficult for Liz and Audrey to match their opponents form. Gradually momentum began to swing in favour of Ann and Susan. Liz and Audrey weren’t helped by having some unfortunate bounces from good shots. In the end some lovely shots to the green and great putts meant the game finished at the 15th.

Well played both teams and congratulations to Ann and Susan for going one better than last year when they were the beaten finalists.

Thank you to the ladies who came to support our finalists, Irvine Golf Club for courtesy of the course and Helen Craig for refereeing

Ella Aitken

It is with great sadness that news came of the death of Past Captain, Ella Aitken.

Ella, a member of West Kilbride Golf Club, was 93 years old and a long time supporter of the County. She enjoyed catching up with all her golfing friends including the Past County Captains lunch while she was still able. A lovely lady who will be sadly missed.

Our thoughts are with her son Brian and daughter Pamela at this sad time.

Championship

A great Championship at Prestwick this year with a new Champion, Sarah Ramsay, winning at the 15th hole yesterday against Roz Purdom.

Roz and Sarah on the 1st tee with Club Captain Pete Graham

The conditions were trying all week but at least it was dry for the most part on the final day. In the morning semi final matches top qualifier Joanne Sharp lost out to Roz Purdom on the 16th hole and Sarah Ramsay overcame 2017 champion Liz Keohone at the 15th.

Both girls found bunkers on the first hole of the final and walked off with a half, a nice par 3 at the 2nd put Roz one up but Sarah won the next 2 holes to go ahead. Sarah then won 6 and 8 to go 3 holes up at the turn. A couple of halves at the start of the back 9 before the girls reached the long tricky 12th hole. Playing particularly long into the wind Sarah hit a superb third shot onto the green to stretch her lead to 4. Roz then got a hole back at 13 but found the bunker on 14 which allowed Sarah to go 4 up with 4 to play. A half at the tricky 15th was enough for Sarah to win her first County Championship.
